Science Shows That Women Sleep Better Next To Dogs Than Men

Sleep is crucial for good health, and researchers are always looking for ways to improve sleep quality. Instead of traditional methods like chamomile tea or meditation, a recent study suggests that women sleep better when next to dogs. Canisius College in New York found that dogs make better sleeping companions than humans or cats.

According to the study’s lead researcher, Dr. Christy Hoffman, women often consider dogs to be better companions in bed compared to cats and human partners. They also reported that having dogs improved the quality of their sleep.

Research Finds that Women Sleep Better Next to Dogs  

Hoffman studied nearly 1,000 women in the U.S. to discover these results. The findings revealed that 55% of the women slept with a dog, 31% with a cat, and 57% with a human partner, leaving the remaining participants without a human partner in their bed.

Hoffman found out why dogs are great bed companions. Dogs’ sleeping patterns are similar to humans, unlike cats.

“The difference between dogs and cats is not surprising because dogs’ major sleep periods tend to coincide more closely with humans’ than do cats,’” said Hoffman. 

Despite the potential advantages of these comparable sleep patterns, further investigation is required to establish their true effects. Nevertheless, Hoffman has proposed some concepts on how this mechanism might operate.

Dogs might be more accommodating to their owner’s sleep schedule compared to human bed partners. Human bed partners often have different sleep and wake times, which can disrupt sleep. Dogs may adapt better to their owner’s schedule than human bed partners do.

Moreover, dogs require certain schedules and responsibilities, such as a morning walk. This kind of regime helps their owners maintain a routine, improving sleep quality as a result.

Stillness and Security 

Dogs often sleep stiffly, which can be disruptive for those sharing a bed with them. In a study, women mentioned that their dogs usually stayed on the bed throughout the night, unlike cats who were more likely to move around.

Cats are more prone to causing disturbances by moving on and off the bed at night compared to dogs. Additionally, dog owners tend to stick to more regular bedtime and wake time routines than cat owners, often going to bed earlier and waking up earlier as well, according to Hoffman.

The third and most crucial point to consider is that dogs offer a feeling of safety and protection to their owners. This is especially true when compared to cats or even human companions.

Hoffman mentioned that dog owners might find solace in knowing that their dog will notify them in case of an intruder or emergency. Additionally, a dog’s bark could discourage potential intruders. On the other hand, a cat is less inclined to fulfill this role, thus it may not offer the same psychological comfort as a dog.

The Best Partner for Quality Sleep 

The research indicates that dogs can be great sleeping companions, but the advantages may vary from person to person. Some dogs might snore or make the bed uncomfortable. On the other hand, some people find that their cats are helpful for a good night’s sleep.

The study focused on how volunteers view their pets’ impact on their sleep quality and duration. More unbiased research is necessary to determine if dogs are truly the best sleeping companions. Despite this, Hoffman thinks these studies could be helpful since a lot of American homes have pets.

She mentioned the importance of further exploring how having pets in bed can affect sleep quality, both positively and negatively. It is crucial to understand the different scenarios in which co-sleeping with pets can either improve or worsen one’s sleep.

For example, studies have indicated that women experience better sleep when they are alone compared to when they share a bed with a partner, although some people hold the opposite view. It is suggested that future studies could utilize devices similar to Fitbit to accurately monitor the sleep patterns of individuals under various sleeping arrangements.
