Traditional solutions like breast creams and gels are often wiped off before taking effect due to frequent feeding. Moreover, using painkillers and antibiotics during breastfeeding is generally discouraged unless prescribed by a doctor in extreme cases. The surprising solution to this widespread problem can be found in your kitchen – cabbage leaves. Yes, you read that correctly. Many women worldwide use this natural and effective method to reduce breast swelling. A recent study confirmed the positive impact of cold cabbage leaves in relieving breast engorgement and pain. The study, conducted on lactating mothers aged 13 to 50, revealed that using cabbage leaves not only reduced pain and hardness but also extended breastfeeding duration, providing fast relief within 20 minutes.

Using this method is straightforward. Begin by placing the cabbage in the refrigerator, with a preference for green cabbage according to the Canadian Breastfeeding Foundation (2). Once the cabbage feels cold, remove the outermost layer and discard it, revealing the fresh, light green leaves inside. Take two large leaves, wash them with cold water to remove any dirt or residual pesticides, and cut off the tough stems at the bottom. Wrap the leaves around your breasts, ensuring a snug fit but avoiding coverage of your nipples. If the leaves are too crisp, consider crushing them slightly with a rolling pin for better flexibility. Keep the cabbage leaves in position for about 20 minutes while lying down. You can use a light cotton bra to secure the leaves in place. However, it’s important not to exceed the 20-minute timeframe, as there are concerns that prolonged use of cabbage leaves may potentially reduce milk production.

You’ll experience significant relief from the first application. Once the leaves wilt, discard them. Repeat this treatment 2 or 3 times a day, using a fresh set of leaves each time.
