Creating Optical Illusions With Makeup Is Messing With Our Minds – After Giving Up Teaching, This Woman Is Doing Just That

Mimi Choi, a 31-year-old makeup artist from Vancouver, Canada, has tapped into the true potential of makeup. Her imaginative hyperreal optical illusions have earned her a whopping 274,000 followers on Instagram.
Mimi had worked in a pre-school for three years as a teacher before finding her passion for makeup art. “Although I enjoyed teaching, I wasn’t completely content,” she explained. “I felt the need to seek a new challenge.” To satisfy her creative urges, she began to experiment with makeup brushes in her own home.
Mimi had always been interested in art, and had done bridal makeup prior to enrolling at a local beauty college. While her skills had improved, it wasn’t until Halloween was approaching that her work really took off. She wanted to create something unique for the holiday, and after seeing a photo of a woman with a cracked face on Instagram, she was inspired to push the boundaries of her craft. She was able to create a look that allowed her to display her creativity in a way she hadn’t previously done.
I had never experimented with bold makeup looks before, but I decided to take a chance and picked up my black and white eyeliner. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made, and the rest is history!

Choi uses her understanding of perspective to craft her awe-inspiring work, adding three-dimensional depth to a two-dimensional surface. She utilizes makeup like a painter working with their brush, strategically placing shadows to emphasize certain features or make them appear to recede into the background.
